If you clean your teeth and gums regularly and effectively with the appropriate toothbrush and also between teeth (using floss or inter-dental brushes), then the plaque levels in your mouth will be at a minimum. This will ensure a healthy mouth and avoid losing teeth in the long run.
Signs of gum disease include:
- Bleeding and swollen gums
- Loosening of Teeth
- Bad Breath
- Gum pockets (i.e. loosening of the gums at the edges of the teeth)
What happens if gum disease is left untreated?
The answer is simple – the teeth get looser and will eventually fall out. This is because the harmful plaque slowly destroys the supporting bone (irreversibly!) around the roots. Treatment to replace missing teeth is then time consuming, more complex and expensive.
Keith suffered from advanced gum disease. He lost three teeth, and had others that were getting looser. He saw our hygienist for multiple visits, and we have now got him to a healthy situation through thorough professional cleaning, excellent homecare and giving up smoking.
Achieving a healthy mouth with fresh breath should be the number one goal for everyone!
Bad breath is embarrassing and can have many social implications.
Often people have bad breath without even knowing about it.
Most people don't realize but the tongue is covered with a film of debris, food, plaque and bacteria. By using a tongue scraper (once or twice a day for just a few seconds) ensures this film has a limited life-span in the mouth. For effective treatment of bad breath – a complete oral hygiene maintenance programme is essential.
